Mark Shuttleworth – the man behind Ubuntu project has announced on his blog post that the Netbook edition of Ubuntu 10.10 will have a single menu bar in the panel for all applications. The global menu bar will be enabled by default in the Netbook edition. However this will not be put on the desktop edition of Ubuntu.
According to Shuttleworth, this design will save the vertical space and will be beneficial in browsing the internet. Most web pages fit in the horizontal screen but require a lot of vertical scrolling. More vertical space means more enjoyment surfing the net. He further states:
Generally, people use netbooks with a small set of applications running, all maximised. In that case, putting the menu in the panel will save 24 pixels, about 4% of the vertical space. In mockups and prototype testing, the result was a leaner, cleaner feeling netbook interface. Less clutter, less wasted space, and improved clarity of purpose.
You might have already seen the Global menu bar in Mac. Though the idea is basically from there, there will be lot of changes in Ubuntu’s global menu bar. It will have a innovative style of combining title and menu in a single panel though its not confirmed yet.
