After two years of long waiting, Google has finally released a highly-requested Gmail feature, Voice and Video Chat support for Linux.
Currently the plugin supports only Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux, Google says and the RPM package for Red Hat-based distros is coming shortly. One can get the .deb file from http://gmail.com/videochat.
Adding Linux support wasn’t a trivial task for Google Engineers. Google says,
“This release required significant engineering to develop an all-new video rendering solution and an all-new PulseAudio-based audio handler, along with work to support 64-bit and countless webcam compatibility tests. We spent a lot of effort to make it fully feature-complete, with all the same goodies as the Windows and Mac versions, and we’re happy to now support Google voice and video now on all major desktop platforms.”
Now Video and Voice chat in Gmail, iGoogle and Orkut is supported on all three major platforms viz. Windows, Mac and Linux with 64-bits support as well.
And it’s clear Google is not ignoring the Linux Community, though it took nearly two years for this feature to arrive.
