Dropbox is an easy way to store, sync and share files online and supports Windows, Mac, Linux as well as mobile. But according to developers of Sparkleshare, Dropbox has downsides as well: you can’t host your own server; it’s not open source and has some freaky things in its license agreement.sparkleshare

Sparkleshare provides almost all the features of Dropbox and has other benefits like better Gnome integration, ability to set up on own server, more real-time features and less freaky things in license agreement. It will be available for Linux, Mac OS X as well as windows.

The first beta release of SparkleShare has been announced for Linux.  You can download the beta from here and find the release notes. The announcement about the beta release reads

Hylke: Aside from the usual bug fixes and behind the scenes work I mainly added features that increase productivity in the event logs. Not only does it look a lot prettier, each entry in an event log now has a clickable link for easy access to files. It refreshes automatically on new events as well. The Nautilus plugin now has the “Copy Web Link” context menu item, which makes sharing links a whole lot easier.

You have a pretty serious type. Should probably read sparkleshare instead of dropbox in the following sentence.

I love when someone takes another to task about typo’s and commits a typo in the task-taking. How ironic.

Can one clarify.. “and has some freaky things in its license agreement.” Their license agreement is much cleaner and much more sane than most.

Practically speaking, a regular home user seldom hosts “own server”. DropBox works really great across all the OS. It’s integration with Ubuntu (not sure about other disotro) is perfectly fine. For me it works even better than native UbuntuOne. I am not sure about the “freaky things in license agreement”, but believe SparkleShare should come up with more valid reasons to lure new users.

You have to roll your own for dropbox on debian. The .deb files are for Ubuntu only (since they messed with a file name.

The main issue is that companies want to have DropBox like functionality, but there are too many InfoSec concerns with posting confidential or even sensitive company data to a third party.

We need a DropBox replica, but with the ability to host the backend on company resources (even over a VPN). I think Sparkleshare may be able to provide that functionality.
