The alpha version of uTorrent – one of the most used BitTorrent manager is now available for Linux. You can download the uTorrent server for Linux, suited for those who run the program from the command line. The Linux client is yet to be released.
uTorrent is a light torrent downloading application and the windows version is just about 320 KB. The current uTorrent server for linux -alpha (3.0 build 21701) is about 1 Mb. The features of include web-based remote control, multiple simultaneous downloads and options to limit the bandwidth allocation.
uTorrent for Windows was released back in 2005 and the Mac version in 2008. The Linux version after much demand has been released in 2010. Marked as alpha released, this current Linux version lacks full-featured GUI. This release is intended for getting feedback from the user.
You can download uTorrent for Linux from the downloads section of utorrent website. According to the website, “This is a native Linux port and is known to work on Ubuntu 9.10+, Debian 5+ and Fedora 12+. Others may work, but they are not officially supported. Kernel 2.6.13 or newer required. 64-bit host systems currently have some problems, so 32-bit only for now.”
Though free, uTorrent is a closed source software. It has been released to Linux after about 5 years of its Windows release. Many other torrent clients are available for Linux. Do you think Linux users will still love this?
