Maverick Meerkat, codname for the next touch of world’s most popular, Linux-based Ubuntu Operating System, Ubuntu 10.10 has been officially released.
With an outstanding notable improvements and upgrades since Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) released this April, Ubuntu has brought an updated image to the world of Linux Computing. An updated interface called ‘Unity’ has designed for better experiences and specifically tuned for smaller screens and computing on the move.
Focusing on the home and mobile computing users, Ubuntu 10.10 has introduced new features to Ubuntu One Cloud 10 with an array of online and offline applications to Ubuntu Desktop Edition and Ubuntu Netbook Edition users as well. The Canonical’s new personal cloud services, now has a number of new features, including better integration with Nautilus allowing for per-folder/file publishing and capability of syncing files with devices running other operating systems, such as Google’s Android, Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft Windows. Ubuntu One’s file-syncing you can stream your favorite music uninterrupted to your PMPs as well.
Another more prominent application upgrades is the Ubuntu Software Centre, which enables instant access to thousands of applications, games and tools, including ability to purchase commercial applications under “For Purchase” software category , package installation history and the ability to install per-app plugins direct from packages’ overview page.
Ubuntu 10.10 has brought best new and updated technologies straight to your desktop. There are several new and updated applications to use. To the web browsing, firefox is still the default browser, with alternatives like Google Chrome to choose from the Software Centre. Default e-mail application Evolution has been updated and optimised to run much faster than previous OS. F-Spot has now been replaced with Shotwell that allows you to manage and share your pictures with an ease on all the most popular photo and social network sites like Flickr and Facebook. And the most amazingly, the driverless Camera & Phone.
To play videos and your favorite content from YouTube, iPlayer, and MSN Player, Movie Player is there and to edit videos Pitivi video editor has been added. Rhythmbox Player has been improved with an integrated store to buy and download new tracks. ‘Sound Menu’ applet has been greatly enhanced with music player controls and ‘now playing’ track meta data directly retrieved from Rhythmbox.

Over a social layer the Desktop social application Gwibber has been updated with support for Twitter’s new authentication service ‘OAuth’. And now you can access Facebook and Twitter accounts straight from your desktop, with Ubuntu’s all new Me Menu. You can also connect to your favourite chat channels and make updates through a single window.
Ubuntu 10.10, released on 10.10.10 10: 10 GMT Today, with a super-fast boot load; with over hundreds of free games, including puzzles, adventures and more; with a lot of accessibility settings, has remarkably continued its proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.
