Userful has released the MultiSeat Linux 2011, a product designed for schools which turns one Linux computer to 10 independent computer stations. The company claims it to be the Linux alternative to Windows MultiPoint Server 2010.
The software allows multiple users to share one computer using multiple screens. Each person individually controls his or her own station. Multiple students can use different applications at the same time from one computer, each with their own monitor, keyboard, and mouse saving the cost of hardware, plugs and connectors and electricity. To the students, it seems like they each have their own dedicated PC, but in reality they are all sharing the resources of a single host computer.
The company has done a comparison of MultiSeat Linux 2010 with Windows Multipoint Server 2010. Unlike windows MultiPoint, Userful MultiSeat is Linux based, the operating system (OS) and application software thus are all free. A Userful MultiSeat license for each user station is required and there are no other license fees.
